Global Safe Haven Network, a project of the Alyson Ilene Kaplan Memorial Foundation, was established in February 2003 as a result of personal tragedy. Alyson Kaplan, a 20 year-old college student, was stranded when her travel itinerary in England was interrupted by a storm. Lost in an unfamiliar environment outside London, she sought aid from someone she met at a train station who would later murder her. Today, in her memory, her parents, Donald and Joanne Kaplan, are dedicated to finding ways to reduce the risks to young travelers through education to promote safe travel, support for travelers and protection in case of emergencies.

With more and more young people traveling today, the need for information is greater than it has ever been. Preparation and awareness can help prevent personal difficulties, disasters, and tragedies. Global Safe Haven Network offers young travelers, whether traveling domestically or internationally, and their families and friends: education to promote safe travel, travel support to ensure safety and security while on trips, and protection in the event of an emergency.

Global Safe Haven Network is unique in what it offers the youth travel marketplace in three important ways:

It promotes the critical importance of education and training as a way to ensure preparedness for a trip
It distributes travel related information “real time”, 24/7 to its members to contribute to their safe and secure travel
It provides emergency global medical assistance and evacuation services

Stay a S.T.E.P. ahead!

Global Safe Haven Network focuses on being proactive to help avoid emergencies. Our Safe Travel Emergency Plan (S.T.E.P.) is a no nonsense practical tool outlining critical information for use in travel emergencies.

The GSHN member and/or the parent/guardian completes the Emergency Travel Plan PRIOR to trip departure; the original is kept by the traveler with copies submitted to a family member, trip leader and/or tavel organization.
